Exploring the Link Between Cardiovascular Health and Urology: The Benefits of Exercise

Sam Dahl · June 22, 2023 ·

Engaging in physical activity and prioritizing heart health offer numerous advantages. Notably, maintaining cardiovascular well-being through exercise can contribute to the treatment of various urological conditions.

We are well aware of the positive impact of regular exercise. It not only enhances cardiovascular fitness, strength, and endurance but also holds a significant connection to urology.

Urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence is a medical condition that nobody wants to face. And often, those who suffer from bladder issues such as urinary incontinence are reluctant to take part in regular exercise. This is often due to fear that physical activity will intensify urinary leakage. Over time, however, regular exercise will actually improve a number of bladder conditions.

Low-impact exercises such as cycling and swimming will increase muscle strength in the core, chest and spine areas. This can significantly reduce pressure on the bladder and reduce involuntary urinary leakage. However, before getting active, it is important for those suffering from bladder conditions to reach out to their doctor for advice on what exercise suits them because some rigorous movements may worsen their condition.

Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction can often go ignored by men due to feelings of shame and embarrassment or the belief that erectile dysfunction is an isolated issue. However, erectile dysfunction is commonly a secondary condition resulting from other underlying health issues.

These may include heart disease, obesity, or diabetes. If this is the case, patients will certainly benefit from implementing heart-healthy exercises into their daily routine. Through doing this, patients may help rectify the health issue, which originally caused erectile dysfunction, while reducing symptoms as a bonus.

Heart-healthy movement

Do you think increasing physical activity will help you care for your urological health? You can start by finding ways to incorporate low-impact physical activity into your daily routine. Options include:

  • daily walking
  • swimming
  • yoga
  • stretches
  • cycling
  • light jogging

While exercise is always a great start towards improved urological health, it cannot be your only approach. Other lifestyle factors such as excess smoking, drinking and an unhealthy diet can work at the detriment of your overall wellbeing, including your urological health.
