Our kidneys play an essential role in our urological health. These little bean-shaped organs work hard to filter and remove wastes and excess fluid from your body. While we don’t think about them much, it is always a good idea to look after them as best you can to avoid health complications, and the right diet is an important aspect of this self-care
Damaged kidneys can have significant trouble removing phosphates. Phosphates are a mineral that is found in many types of fish, as well as egg yolks and certain grains. It’s a good idea to choose fish which is lower is phosphates to protect and help heal damaged kidneys. In particular, Sea Bass has quite low levels of phosphorous and delivers a bunch of goodness into your body, including high levels of healthy omega-3 fats. Instead of opting for grains high in phosphates opt for other tasty alternatives such as buckwheat and bulgur. For people who are at risk of kidney cancer, this is a great way to keep the kidneys strong and well.
Antioxidants are compounds that help to defend your body’s cells from damage. One of the greatest sources of antioxidants are berries, which can help protect cells from free radicals, known to cause cancer. Blueberries are an especially good choice as well as red and purple grapes. The good thing about berries too, is that they taste delicious and can be incorporated into your diet in an infinite number of ways. Try snacking on fresh berries, or include them in salads and baking. Your kidneys will thank you for it!
Potassium is great for your body as it can help regulate fluid balance within the body while simultaneously supporting the complex nervous system. However, diseased kidneys can often struggle to remove enough potassium before it begins circulating through the blood, which may be problematic. If your kidneys are damaged or diseased, be sure to eat potassium-rich food such as bananas, avocados and potatoes in moderation.
Damaged kidneys often struggle to remove waste from metabolised proteins which are commonly found in red meat. Try an incorporate more lean proteins into your diet and have meat-free days to avoid an overload of proteins swamping your kidneys. Fruit and vegetables are great for your health in every way, especially for your kidneys. Enjoy a rich variation of low phosphate and potassium vegetables including cabbage, carrots, radishes and red peppers.
While a healthy diet benefits you in more ways than one, it can help you to protect your kidneys from damage and disease. It is always important to talk to a trusted professional when it comes to your health.
