Bladder Health Awareness Month: Keep Your Bladder in Top Shape

drinking water - for good bladder health

October marks Bladder Health Awareness Month, a chance to shine a light on an often-overlooked part of our health.

For Australians, staying on top of bladder health isn’t just about comfort—it can help prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs), support kidney function, and even catch bladder cancer early.

Tips for a Healthy Bladder

  1. Stay Hydrated – Aim for around 1.5–2 litres of water a day. Water helps flush bacteria from your urinary tract and keeps your bladder functioning smoothly.
  2. Go When You Need To – Avoid “holding it in” for long periods. Regular emptying reduces your risk of UTIs and other bladder issues.
  3. Practice Good Hygiene – Wiping front to back, wearing breathable fabrics, and changing out of wet clothes quickly can help prevent infections.
  4. Watch Your Diet – Spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol can irritate the bladder in some people. Pay attention to triggers and adjust accordingly.
  5. Know the Signs – Frequent urination, pain, blood in urine, or sudden urges aren’t normal. Seek medical advice promptly if these occur.

Bladder Cancer Awareness
Bladder cancer is one of Australia’s more common cancers, especially in men over 60. Smoking and prolonged exposure to certain chemicals increase risk. Early detection saves lives—don’t ignore warning signs like blood in your urine.

This Bladder Health Awareness Month, take a few simple steps to protect your bladder—your body will thank you.
