Every September, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month shines a spotlight on one of the most common cancers affecting men. Around 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, but with early detection and treatment, survival rates are very high.
Who should be screened?
Men over 50 are encouraged to talk to their doctor about prostate health. If you have a family history of prostate cancer or are of African or Caribbean descent, you may need to start discussions earlier, around age 45.
What are the signs?
Early prostate cancer often has no symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they may include difficulty urinating, a weak flow, or blood in the urine or semen. It’s important to remember these can also be caused by non-cancerous conditions, but they should always be checked.
What can you do this month?
- Book a check-up or talk to your GP about prostate screening.
- Share awareness with friends and family — sometimes a simple reminder can save a life.
- Support fundraising and research initiatives in your community.
Taking action this September isn’t just about raising awareness — it’s about protecting your health for the long term.
