Diet Tips To Help Combat Enlarged Prostate

Sam Dahl · March 8, 2022 ·

prostate diet

As a lot of men get older, their prostate gland can become enlarged, a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. Check out some of our diet tips to assist in treating an enlarged prostate.

In our previous blog post, we had a look at some great diet tips for kidney health. This week, we are focussing on the foods we should eat and avoid to help treat an enlarged prostate.

What to eat

A diet that is super rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats will help to protect the prostate from illness and disease. Try to include some or all of the following foods into your diet as often as possible.

  • salmon
  • tomatoes
  • berries
  • broccoli
  • nuts
  • citrus fruits
  • onions
  • garlic

What not to eat

There are a number of foods that can worsen the condition of an enlarged prostate. Try to avoid the following foods or consume them in moderation.

  • red meats including beef and lamb
  • caffeine
  • sodium
  • alcohol
  • dairy

Managing an enlarged prostate

Apart from diet, there are a number of other ways you can help manage prostate conditions. This includes:

  • managing stress effectively
  • quitting smoking
  • quitting the consumption of drugs such as marijuana
  • avoiding fluids in the evening
  • emptying the bladder entirely when urinating
  • doing pelvic floor exercises
  • avoiding some prescription or over-the-counter medications that can worsen symptoms, such as antihistamines, diuretics, and decongestants
  • trying bladder training exercises
  • limiting your fluid intake to no more than 2 litres of liquids per day
